Grand Madam President Pat Durham has elected to raise funds for the Hutch School at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. Money raised during Pat’s year as president will directly benefit the children and families of the Hutch School.
Each year the Hutch School, a K through 12 accredited school, serves roughly 125 pediatric cancer patients and school-aged family members from across the United States and around the world. The only program of its kind in the country, the Hutch School provides an academically rigorous program but is flexible enough to make allowances for students experiencing an extremely difficult time in their lives. Small class sizes and individual tutoring sessions enable students to keep up with their education. The Hutch School takes advantage of learning opportunities unique to the Northwest, from field trips to salmon hatcheries to hands-on visits to the Hutchinson Center’s research laboratories that help students build on the knowledge of biology and physiology they acquire during the cancer treatment process.
The Hutch School’s unique environment is marked by respect for the exceptional circumstances that have brought the students together. It provides families the ability to stay together throughout the patient’s cancer treatment in Seattle and allows kids to connect with others in similar situations. The Hutch School’s full-time social worker helps students cope with change and stress through individual and group counseling.
The Hutch School’s existence depends on the support of private donors. Because of that generosity, patients and families can experience the emotional benefits of being together during their cancer journey. Learn more at www.hutchschool.org. To support GMP Durham’s charity, please send a check donation to the Eagle Charity Foundation, earmarked in the memo section GMP Charity Project or Hutch School.
